The Superior Labor Court has its origin in the National Labor Council (NLC), created on April 30th, 1923 as an advisory body for government agencies related to labor organization, social and security. It was subordinated to the Ministry of Agriculture, Industry and Commerce. The NLC was transformed into Superior Labor Court on September 9th, 1946, when the labor court stopped operating at the administrative level and became part of the judiciary with the 1946 Brazilian Federal Constitution.

The “Labor Palace” was the first seat of the Superior Labor Court. Located in the city center of Rio de Janeiro, old seat of the Ministry of Labor, the building is currently the seat of the 1st Regional Labor Court Office (Rio de Janeiro).

In 1971, the Court was transferred to Brasilia. In the Federal Capital, the first seat of the Superior Labor Court was in a building located at Setor de Autarquias Sul, currently occupied by the 10th Regional Labor Court (Federal District and Tocantins). In March 1993, the Court started its plans for the construction of a new headquarters building designed by renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. On March 1st, 2006, the 96,000-square-meter complex – the current seat of Superior Labor Court – was inaugurated by Justice Vantuil Abdala, then chief Justice of the Court.

The building also hosts the Superior Council for Labor Justice and the National School for the Education and Further Development of Judges.
